There are many hoops for both sides to jump through before such an occurrence could come about, and I, of all people, should know better than to simply believe Internet rumours in wrestling.
However, sometimes it is fun to let your imagination run wild and imagine the possibilities.
For, you see, Kurt Angle striking a deal with WWE could bring into play an idea I came up with about two years ago, and a dream match I have longed to see for even longer.
Let’s start with the latter. I want more than anything else to see a match (dare I even dream of a series of matches?) between Kurt Angle and Daniel Bryan. If WWE brought Kurt for just one day to fulfil this bout, I would die a happy man. That is, of course, depending on the health of each man. That is going to be a caveat throughout this column.
Moreover, though, this talk of Kurt’s status propels me to a topic than followers of mine on Twitter or my podcast will likely be familiar with.
Some time ago, frustrated by the fact that one of the greatest wrestlers ever was being wasted in front of hardly any viewers, I hatched an idea to use him in WWE once more.
The plan could still be resurrected - with a new twist – and it involves him appearing on Raw just once.
Ever.
Originally, I wanted to see Kurt Angle show up on Raw and declare that he was going to be at the next pay-per-view event, and would take on whoever fancied challenging him.
Kurt then becomes the PPV guy. You could talk about him on Raw – indeed, I would encourage it. Talk about him all the time, show video packages, have other wrestlers talk of him, and show clips from his old matches. Build him up as this machine that you simply had to see wrestle, then give him a talented individual and watch him go.
Repeat this every month, and to me you have a very fine, regular addition to your PPVs. Kurt only has to wrestle 10-12 times a year, keeping him rested, and giving people an extra to reason to buy the monthly shows. Or, as it is now, to purchase the WWE Network.
I still think this is a great idea for Kurt. Imagine who you could line up for him to face. Ziggler and Cesaro would have epic matches with him; Jericho could come back for a walk down memory lane; Bray Wyatt would be an interesting opponent; Sheamus could have a decent encounter; Orton could take him on; it would be a great development for Ambrose, Rollins or; Reigns; and then of course John Cena would have a marquee match. This is all not taking Bryan into account, or maybe even if CM Punk were to return.
If it were to happen soon the Rusev storyline would have a logical conclusion, and a raft of rising NXT stars might get a chance to tangle with Angle. I think there is a good two years’ worth sorted there already.
But now there is an extra special twist. It is one thing to hire Kurt to be a PPV guy – it is quite another to make him a Paul Heyman guy.
If Brock – the champ, lest we forget – is not to be around all that often, then how about bringing in Kurt as his gatekeeper? ‘You want a shot at Brock?’ says Paul, ‘Then you have to go through Kurrrrt Annnngggle.’
isn’t perfect, I’ll admit. For a start, to do the PPV-only gimmick with Kurt, he needs to win a lot. And if he beats top contenders, then how do people get to the top of the mountain to face Brock? There are plenty of things to iron out.
But for a roster shorn of Punk, Bryan and Reigns, and with a champion that doesn't appear on every show, things could do with a little leg up. And what better combination that Angle and Heyman to fill a gap?
