This is the second concussion in less than a year for Ziggler.
WWE physician Chris Amann spoke with WWE.com about Ziggler's injury.
" Unfortunately Dolph sustained a concussion during his match on the clothesline given to him byRyback. We were able to evaluate him in the ring; he was having some confusion and disorientation. We took him back to the training room and confirmed a concussion. He’s currently feeling better but we’ll proceed with ImPACTtesting and further evaluation to determine when we can get him back in the ring."According to WWE's corporatewebsite, "an Impact test measures the effects of a concussion through cognitive tests."
The website also gives the guidelines for a concussed Superstar to return to action:
- If a WWE Talent shows symptoms of a concussion or has suffered a concussion, then that WWE Talent will not be cleared for a return to wrestling until he/she passes anImPACT test and is cleared clinically by a certified physician.
- ImPACT tests are typically taken byWWE Talent within 24-72 hours post injury.
- If the post-injuryImPACT results do not indicate a recovery, then that WWE Talent will not be cleared until he/she retakes the ImPACT test , passes the ImPACTtest and is subsequently cleared clinically by a certified physician. RepeatImPACT tests are usually administered 2-3 days after the first post injury ImPACTtest.
Last April, Ziggler took a stiff kick from Jack Swagger to the face, causing a concussion that sidelined him for nearly two months. Worst yet, it halted all of the momentum he had gained from capturing the World Heavyweight Championship on the April 8 episode of Raw.
Ziggler recently spoke with WWEMagazine about the concussion and the difficulty he had getting over the brain injury.
" For once in my life I felt helpless, because I couldn't control my fate. I was sitting at home for weeks with 24-hour headaches. And I started thinking I might never be able to come back, or if I did, what would happen to me in the ring. I've known people who came back from injuries with all that hard work, and no matter what the situation, they've never quite the same."
The effects of concussions have come into the light over the last five years, with teams and organizations placing great emphasis on protecting athletes suffering from the injuries.WWE was one of the first major sports organizations to implement testing to ensure that no performer suffering from a concussion will be permitted to perform.
The fact that it took Ziggler as long as it did to recover from his first concussion a year ago is cause for concern when it comes to his latest injury. Head injuries are already difficult and touchy situations but, inZiggler's case, they become significantly more difficult given the damage done the first time.
The injury is a big blow for the WWEmidcard, which Ziggler has become a fixture in lately. He is a workhorse for the company and has been known to wrestle on two or three different televised shows a week, not to mention the live events he competes on during weekends.
It creates an opening for someone else to step up and try to carry the ball Ziggler has carried for so very long.
We wish Dolph Ziggler a speedy, uncomplicated recovery.
